Being Beta is not the absence of confidence

I think we have a spectrum. There’s the unhealthy Beta that tends to go self-pity, shame, passive aggressiveness, and there’s the overinflated Alpha who’s just ego driven, everybody-else-outta-the-way and doesn’t think of others, but when they both get healthy they look a lot like each other. They’re here in the middle and they embrace both sides of that confidence, that strength but also that emotional attunement. (Billy)

What does an unhealthy Beta and Alpha look like?

It all boils down to insecurities, and that it manifests in different ways:

  • For an insecure Alpha, this could manifest as showing off instead of showing up in your friend groups and relationships, and it is all about them.
  • For an insecure Beta, they become quiet, small, and shrink themselves because they feel less than.

A healthy Beta can teach a healthy Alpha how to step back and observe their actions, be accountable for what they bring to the table, and to “clean their side of the street”. A healthy Alpha can show a Beta how to express their needs within a discussion, and not revert back to being agreeable all the time just to keep the peace.

Defining Beta and Alpha

An Alpha is someone who can be the leader of the pack very comfortably and a Beta is someone who supports the pack on the journey.

So really Alpha and Beta are just constructs to describe personalities … it gave us a very simple way to break down what we would consider an unhealth in two simple personality types. What we want to see is people becoming fully integrated with their truly authentic being. (Billy)

In essence, when a Beta and an Alpha are healthy and well-functioning, they look a lot like one another. There is a Beta and an Alpha in each person, and it comes down to understanding where your strengths lie.

Women don’t necessarily need these alpha bravado providers anymore, we can provide for ourselves and we can take care of things, but we want a partner, we want someone who is emotionally available and that’s this evolution of the evolving man. (Brandy)
